Eleven Sittings: Building a Horizon

Every large canvas starts as a postcard-sized charcoal drawing pinned to the studio wall. For Dry Season Horizon, that drawing stayed up for nearly a month before I touched linen.
The first three sittings were all ground: thin washes of raw sienna, rubbed in with a rag. Only on the fourth day did the horizon line appear — and it moved twice before the end.
What you see now is the residue of all that searching. The scraped passages in the lower third are where earlier layers refused to be buried.
